There's a road in the desert that you really need to cruise through.

While the 2 certainly offers a longer technical road, it doesn't rival the beauty of the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway (74).

You start down in the desert in Palms Springs, climbing up the mountain that eventually gives way to beautiful, green forestland. As the name suggests, of course.

The drive from Los Angeles is pretty long, but it's totally worth it. You can stop at the In N Out in Palms Springs before heading up and enjoy your drive, belly full of animal style goodness. Work off the greasy food on the various hiking trails.

There's a lot of farmland out there, too. So, expect to come back home with a car covered in bugs.

P.S.

My WRX is at the dealership getting an oil leak looked at that was discovered when it was getting it serviced. My dealership hooked me up with Enterprise who dropped me into a stinky, stained Hyundai Elantra. Which, while a good appliance, is boring, automatic, and economi-OH GOD I MISS MY REXY PRAY FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY!

This thing doesn't have an auto-dimming rearview mirror so every brodozer I get stuck behind blinds the shit out of me. The seating position is too damn high! The windows are automatic only when you're lowering them, and did I mention the foul stench of dirty laundry that's permeating throughout the vehicle?

Also, there's some clear, jelly substance on the steering wheel that scares me.

Right now its only redeeming quality is the fact that it's got XM fitted to it. Backspin!

It's considerably cooler up there than it is down in the desert. If I lived down there I'd practically live on that road.

Did it a couple months ago. Went all the way up from San Diego through Julian on the little mountain roads. Mmmmmm. The M3 was tired by the time we rolled into Palm Springs. Don't tell the police.
